Halloween Safety Tips

OCTOBER 31, 2012 - HALLOWEEN SAFETY TIPS

HALLOWEEN SAFETY TIPS:

As thousands of little ghouls and goblins and piratesand princesses head to the streets tonight for Halloween, authorities areasking parents and drivers to be extra cautious to prevent the night having atragic ending.  Parents need to be prepared andconsider safety when planning trick-or-treating routes and costumes.

Here are some safety guidelines:
Walk with your kidsup to the door.
Stay in neighborhoodsthat are familiar to you.
Be very aware ofloose, flowing costumes. Many homes will have candles on the porch.
Keep thechild-to-adult ratio low to ensure all children are being properly monitored atall time for safety.
Make sure costumesare flame-retardant and light or bright in color. Dark costumes should havereflective or glow in the dark tape. Costumes should also be short enough toprevent tripping.
Use face paintsrather than a mask that can obstruct both breathing and vision, and to makesure every child has a nametag complete with their address and telephonenumbers and a flashlight.
Treats should not beeaten until the child is home so that you can inspect everything first. Lookfor signs of tampering and discard all loose and homemade treats (unless youknow the person who provided them).
Warn children, atthis time and always, to never accept a ride with a stranger and to always telltheir parent exactly where they will be going, what time to expect them homeand to stick to the plan.
Motorists also need to be cautious tonight when out and about, andavoid traveling through residential areas, as trick-or-treaters may not bepaying attention to traffic and may be trying to cross in the middle of a blockor between parked cars. Motorists should scan far ahead when driving inresidential areas, watch for children and cautiously monitor their actions.Turn on your headlights to make yourself more visible - even in the daylight.
Darius Rucker – who admits he always dresses up each year atHalloween with his kids - talks about his favorite Halloween costume, and what,or should we say who, he’s going to dress as this year:

PAISLEY AND DOLLY

OCTOBER 30, 2012 - PAISLEY AND DOLLY
A couple of funny stories from Nashville today, and I thought I would share them with you off the radio...

HAPPY BIRTHDAY MR. PAISLEY

Brad Paisley celebrated his 40th birthday on Sunday and in honor of this occasion, Paisley's Grand Ole Opry Family sent him a special birthday greeting from the Opry stage. The video shows a woman standing next to a giant birthday cake on the legendary stage with her back facing the camera. The woman is dressed like Marilyn Monroe when she sang the now iconic "Happy Birthday Mr. President" song to President John F. Kennedy in 1962. She substitutes the words "Mr. Paisley" for "Mr. President" and then once she finishes singing the song, the clip cuts to Little Jimmy Dickens who is dressed up in the very same Monroe white dress complete wig and fake bosom and he says, "Happy Birthday Mr. Paisley," before he grabs his fake boobs and says, "This girdle is killing me."  Just watch!

DOLLY AND THE SEVEN DWARFS
With her lovable personality and stunning looks, it's easy to see why the world so wholly embraces the legendary Dolly Parton. These attributes also give the singer a certain enchanting quality that might have some saying that Dolly is indeed the fairest of them all. When it comes to having her own affinity with a fabled fair lady, Parton says she identifies herself with a woman whose heart is as white as snow, but it might not be for the most wholesome reason. Dolly tells Vanity Fair that her favorite fairytale character is, "Snow White, because she slept with the seven dwarfs and got away with it."

Here's a hilarious Carol Burnett Snow White skit...enjoy!

A HAUNTING WE WILL GO!

OCTOBER 29, 2012 - A HAUNTING WE WILL GO!

Hauntings for Halloween!

There are some interesting haunted spots in the SE Missouri area, some of which can be found in Cape!

Read about Old Lorimer Cemetary and The Glenn House here:

http://theghostsofcapegirardeau.blogspot.com/

As Halloween approaches, Rodney Atkins ponders if the Grand Ole Opry – who has hosted the likes of Hank Williams, Patsy Cline, Tammy Wynette, Johnny Cash and more – is haunted? He shares:
Rodney Atkins: "Do I believe in ghosts? For the Grand Ole Opry? That place is full of spirit. To me, that’s why they call it the mother church. Is...You go there, it’s why you go to church on Sunday. Your spirit’s renewed. You’re reminded how you’re supposed to live as a country artist. How you’re supposed to carry yourself, of what you’re representing. You're reminded by the Grand Ole Opry."

If you have a haunting story, share it!

REBA AND BLAKE, TV STARS

OCTOBER 25, 2012 - REBA AND BLAKE, TV STARS
We talked earlier this week about Blake Shelton's interview in Cowboys and Indians Magazine, and how he was influenced by Reba's success.  With Reba growing up in Oklahoma too, Blake felt inspired that he could achieve success.  Reba's new TV sitcom Malibu Country begins airing in November, and Blake's show The Voice is currently airing.  They are both successful in their own country music venue, and are enjoying the added success that television allows.
ROCK STAR PROVIDED IDEA FOR NEW REBA TV SHOW
Reba's new sitcom, Malibu Country – which premieres on November 2 on ABC – actually stems from an idea from the Eurythmics' Dave Stewart. Reba tells Newsday, "Dave Stewart was on an airplane to L.A. from Nashville with my oldest son Brandon. They were asking each other what they do, and Dave told Brandon that he had a sitcom idea. He told it to him, and Brandon said, 'Why don't you get Reba McEntire to do it?' Dave said, 'Oh, she's already got a TV show.' Brandon said, 'No, that got canceled in 2006.' And Dave said, 'Well, email this idea to her!' And I fell in love with it." Reba also shares that her new show is something she's been looking for. She says, "I didn't want to leave television when ('Reba') got canceled. I was having so much fun, and we still had so many stories to tell, I was looking for a new show all this time."

COUNTRY STANDS OUT TO SHELTON
Country music has been gaining a lot of popularity lately, whether it's country singers starring on TV talent search shows or the new primetime drama Nashville showing on ABC, this genre is very much a part of today's pop culture. Blake Shelton is part of the country craze that's sweeping the nation as he coaches on NBC's The Voice and he recognizes a couple things about this genre that distinguishes it from the rest. Shelton tells Cowboys & Indians magazine, "Lyrically, country music is so in-depth. There are writers who spend days, weeks, months, sometimes a year on one song. And making sure they're writing something special. Sure, sometimes it might only take 15 minutes. But they're always making sure they're writing something that connects with people. It's not about a gimmick. It's about things that are relatable for people that they can understand -- it's not over their heads." And number two he adds, "It's easy to sing along to, and it's easy to understand. When you're in your car and you're driving from work back home, you don't want to think too hard about what you're listening to on the radio. You want to smile or have a moment when you go back to something in your life that you like to remember. I think with pop and rock these days the music gets away from that a little bit."

BLAKE SHELTON COWBOY? SURE.

OCTOBER 23, 2012 - BLAKE SHELTON COWBOY? SURE.
THE FIRST TIME BLAKE GOT PAID FOR A GIG
When Blake Shelton was growing up in Ada, Oklahoma he began to sing and playing the guitar at a young age and by the time he was in his mid-teens his aspirations of becoming a musician were evident. Blake performed in front of hometown crowds at the McSwain Theatre in Ada and he remembers the first time he was compensated for one of his performances. Shelton tells Cowboys & Indians, "One day, after about the sixth or seventh time that I performed there the guy that owned the show came up and handed me $40. And I was stunned. I was just beside myself. I was 15, 16 years old — I can't remember which —and I just stood there thinking, 'What the hell just happened? I just got money?' Because, hey, I would have paid him for the chance to play there. It was a really big moment for me. And I don't know if it ever crossed my mind that I could make a living doing it. But, yeah, I do think I'd already decided at that point that that's what I was going to do with my life either way."
When considering whether or not he could really make it as a professional musician, Blake also received encouragement from a fellow Oklahoman who was hitting it big at that time, Reba. Shelton shares, "Where she was born and raised isn't 35 miles from where I was born and raised. And while I was coming up, going to high school and being a country music fan, Reba McEntire was as big as you could get in country music, and as popular as you could be. And I couldn't believe she grew up right there (in Kiowa), that close to where I grew up. I figured if she could do it, I could do it."

MALIBU COUNTRY'S MUSIC

OCTOBER 18, 2012 - MALIBU COUNTRY'S MUSIC

MALIBU COUNTRY'S MUSIC
Reba's brand new sitcom Malibu Country is getting ready to premiere on ABC the night after the CMA Awards on November 2. With actress Lily Thomlin playing her mother, the show centers around Reba's character as a country singer who moved to LA after leaving her cheating husband.
Reba talked to Entertainment Tonight about having a good amount of music in the show:
"We hope a lot because that's what the fans are really asking for. They're really excited about me playing a country singer and being divorced from my husband who is still a country singer and I'm still working on reviving my career getting it back and going. So, I do write a lot of the songs in the show I'm working on em and having a lot of meetings jump starting our career again... So, yeah we've already got two songs in the pilot and the first episode, so we're ready to go with the music." -Reba
Reba has also talked to some of her country music friends about making guest appearances on the show:
"I've already talked to Blake (Shelton) and Kelly (Clarkson) and they said yes that they would appear, so we just got to get the script right when we need 'em in here and it's got to be honest. Everything about this show's got to be honest. This would really happen." - Reba

Reba is excited about her new show, and she deserves the success!

COUNTRY CHURCH MEMBER

OCTOBER 17, 2012 - COUNTRY CHURCH MEMBER
A NEW MEMBER OF COUNTRY MUSIC'S CHURCH
Last night at the Grand Ole Opry marked a milestone for Darius Rucker who officially became a member of the organization after an induction from Vince Gill. During the show, several friends of Rucker including Brad PaisleyJason AldeanAlan Jackson, golfer Tiger Woods and Keith Urban shared their congrats through video. Urban's video claimed he was in Las Vegas and couldn't make it in person for the event, but suddenly Keith walked out onto the Opry stage and hugged Darius while the crowd screamed.
Before the show got under way, Rucker expressed what it meant to him to become a member:
"There's not many genres of music that have their church the church of country music is the Grand Ole Opry. It's one of those things that meant so much to me because I knew if I could ever be a member it wasn't…there's no more conversation about me being accepted or anything… I'm in. And you look at the names of the people that have been inducted and they're legends. They are legends… they're modern day legends and old time legends and for me to now be, you know, right next to them standing shoulder and shoulder to them that was something I dreamt about and now it's a dream come true." -Darius Rucker

Darius says that he will fulfill his member duties and play the Opry stage as much as he can:
"I play the Opry a lot now, but you know I like playing the Opry it's easy I live in South Carolina it's easy to get in the bus, drive overnight play golf all day, play the Opry, drive back home. You know, that's something that I do a lot. You know I've made my commitment to them and I plan to hold up to it." - Darius Rucker

Congratulations again to Darius Rucker!

TODAY IS WORLD FOOD DAY AND NATIONAL BOSS'S DAY

OCTOBER 16, 2012 - TODAY IS WORLD FOOD DAY AND NATIONAL BOSS'S DAY
Let's try to find ways to make our world better...one day at a time...

Boss's Day in United States
National Boss Day is October 16th of each year. When the holiday falls on a weekend, it is generally celebrated on the working day closest to October 16th. National Boss Day started in 1958. Patricia Bays Haroski, then an employee at State Farm Insurance Company in Deerfield, Illinois, registered the holiday with the Chamber of Commerce of the United States. Patricia´s idea was to show appreciation for her boss and other bosses. Her purpose in promoting National Boss Day through the years has been to improve the relationship between employees and their bosses. In particular, younger employees, she believes, often do not realize the problems bosses face in running a business. She designated October 16th as the special day because it was her father's birthday. "I had worked for a large company and noticed that they never had a regular date set to pay tribute to our bosses," Haroski wrote in 1970. "I made inquiries, and through my network of secretaries, decided to establish a day in their honor. Reflecting on how my father had helped his white-collar daughters and sons many times with their problems concerning their work, I decided to register his birthday, October 16, as 'The Day.' In 1958, I gave it some authority by registering October 16th as National Boss Day with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. In 1962, Illinois Governor Otto Kerner proclaimed the day. This observance is fun for our bosses, and they do a lot of smiling that day." Common observes of National Boss Day include giving a greeting card, gift, or some other token of appreciation to the "boss" (manager, supervisor or executive). Some organizations hold group activities such as company lunches or executive appreciation. Plan ahead. Show your boss your appreciation by planning a lunch or having a gift basket delivered. Show him or her how much you appreciate the fact that you have a job. If you are a boss, let your employees know how much you appreciate your employees. Show them your appreciation by listening to them, standing behind them when needed and giving praise where praise is due. Enjoy your day, you deserve it! "Nothing ever comes to one, that is worth having, except as a result of hard work." ~ Booker T. Washington

CANCER AWARE HARLEY DARE

OCTOBER 15, 2012 - CANCER AWARE HARLEY DARE

Just an update on Brian Winans and Mike Taylor on their long distance motorcycle ride to raise awareness for cancer.
They have completed the first 1000 miles, in LESS THAN 24 HOURS!  They actually completed it in just over 20 hours!
SUCCESS!

BEFORE DEPARTING WITH DOUG OWENS!

The Cancer Aware Harley Dare
Updated on Saturday

This challenge was offered to a monumental number of riders but only two accepted: Brian Winans and Mike Taylor from McClure, Illinois. These two riders accepted the challenge and stated they would go to any extreme to help in the fight against cancer. Not only did Brian and Mike agree to do this but they are doing it on 2 of Harley-Davidson’s most bare-bones models: a Sportster and a Dyna, respectively. No windshields, no air ride, no fairings, no protection from the elements! Bootheel and the two riders are in agreement, it’s not about them, it is about bringing awareness to the fight against cancer. The riders will be riding from Bootheel Harley-Davidson to Naples Florida non-stop for the first 1,000 miles of the challenge having to complete it within 24 hours… failure is not an option, but certainly a possibility. They will then start a second leg of the journey through the Florida Everglades, Miami, Key West and Daytona spreading the word of this epic ride to bring awareness to the fight against cancer. (The total round trip will be approximately 3,000 miles) The question on everyone’s mind is, “WILL THEY MAKE IT?” This is a serious race in the fight against cancer and is not being taken lightly. Follow their progress and decide for yourself!  Stay tuned to follow the progress of these two young men through the elements and hard ride to bring awareness to Cancer.

COLUMBUS DAY, OBSERVE IT OR DON'T

OCTOBER 8, 2012 - COLUMBUS DAY, OBSERVE IT OR DON'T

With the advent of the History Channel, plus the 2004 publication of Columbus era documents, came the realization for many Americans that Christopher Columbus’ influence weighed heavier on the negative than on the positive for our nation’s history.  While there are still protests and controversy surrounding Columbus Day, it seems, at least according to Wikipedia, to depend on where you live in the U.S. and its territories as to whether you observe or celebrate the coming of Columbus to the Americas on October 12, 1492.

Columbus Day
Actual observance varies in different parts of the United States, ranging from large-scale parades and events to complete non-observance. Most states celebrate Columbus Day as an official state holiday, though many mark it as a "Day of Observance" or "Recognition" and three do not recognize it at all. Most states (including states where it's not a legal holiday) close schools and other state services, while others operate as normal.  San Francisco claims the nation's oldest continuously existing celebration with the Italian-American community's annual Columbus Day Parade, which was established by Nicola Larco in 1868, while New York City boasts the largest.  As in the mainland U.S., Columbus Day is a legal holiday in the U.S. territory of Puerto Rico. In the United States Virgin Islands, the day is celebrated as both Columbus Day and "Puerto Rico Friendship Day."  Virginia also celebrates two legal holidays on the day, Columbus Day and Yorktown Victory Day, which honors the final victory at the Siege of Yorktown in the Revolutionary War.
Non-observance
Hawaii, Alaska, and South Dakota are the three states that do not recognize Columbus Day at all, though Hawaii and South Dakota mark the day with an alternative holiday or observance. Hawaii celebrates Discoverers' Day, which commemorates the Polynesian discoverers of Hawaii on the same date, the second Monday of October, though the name change has not ended protest related to the observance of Columbus' discovery.  The state government does not treat either Columbus Day or Discoverers' Day as a legal holiday; state, city and county government offices and schools are open for business. South Dakota celebrates the day as an official state holiday known as "Native American Day" rather than Columbus Day.  Several other states have removed Columbus Day as a paid holiday for government workers while still maintaining it either as a day of recognition or a legal holiday for other purposes. These include California and Texas.
In 2007, Dane County Wisconsin Supervisor Ashok Kumar replaced Columbus Day with Indigenous People's Day. The city of Berkeley, California has replaced Columbus Day with Indigenous People's Day since 1992, a move which has been replicated by several other localities. Two other California cities, Sebastopol and Santa Cruz, now celebrate Indigenous People's Day.  Various tribal governments in Oklahoma designate the day "Native American Day", or name the day after their own tribe. The Navajo Nation replaced Columbus Day with Navajo Nation Sovereignty Day, which is observed on April 4.
