JUNE 7, 2012 - JUNE
IS GREAT OUTDOORS MONTH!
Get
out and enjoy the grand weather that we are having in southeast Missouri. You can take the dog, take a walk, go for a
bike ride, or just sit in the yard and soak up some vitamin D (with sunscreen,
please!). Whatever you choose, enjoy the
outdoors—here are a few ways to do so—close to home.
TRAIL
OF TEARS STATE PARK IN CAPE COUNTY:
3415-acres
is a memorial to the Cherokee Indians
LAKE
TRAIL-Length: 2.25 Miles
This
picturesque trail runs along the shoreline of Lake Boutin and then loops around
the basic campground, crossing valleys and ridges. Remnants of old homesteads
may be seen with evidence of clearings, old roadbeds, a man-made pond and
barbed wire fencing through trees. In some places, you may detect the rows of tulip
poplars that were planted by park staff in the 1960s in an effort to reforest
old farm fields. A rare plant, the pennywort, may be found on this trail early
in the spring. A short section of the Lake Boutin Campground road is used as
you travel the trail loop.
CAPE
GIRARDEAU CONSERVATION AND NATURE CENTER:
Facility
includes trails, exhibits, an auditorium, classrooms, and a nature shop.
The
Cape Girardeau Conservation Nature Center is located within Cape Girardeau's
North County Park and showcases the rich cultural history and diverse natural
resources of Southeast Missouri. The Nature Center features hands-on
exhibits for all ages, a scientific research laboratory, freshwater aquariums,
and an indoor wildlife viewing area. There are miles of nature trails, sinkholes
and deep hollows, the trails also connect to Wood Duck Swamp and Maple Hollow
Trail. Native plants featured in the nature center's landscape provide
habitat for hummingbirds, butterflies and other wildlife species. For
more information about the Cape Girardeau Conservation Nature Center
visit website.
CAPE
SPLASH
Complete
with a 700 ft. Lazy River, flume slides, swirl and leisure pool, a spray
pad for the kids, bath house, changing facilities and lots of places to rest in
the shade, you'll have a blast! Cape Splash will be open until September 3rd every day from 11 a.m.-7
p.m.
CAPAHA PARK
There are city league
and Capaha Baseball Team games at Capaha Park in Cape nearly every night. Click here for the Capaha schedule.
The 10-hole disc golf
course is often busy at Capaha…and now that the city has installed “t-boxes”…it
is easier to determine the course direction and holes. Fun exercise, and anyone can participate…you
don’t have to be a pro.
