NATIONAL JOHNNY APPLESEED DAY

SEPTEMBER 26, 2012 - NATIONAL JOHNNY APPLESEED DAY

IS IT TIME FOR APPLES?  IT'S NATIONAL JOHNNY APPLESEED DAY.
Today marks the birthday of John Chapman in 1774.  John Chapman was a gentleman that most of us know better as Johnny Appleseed. Johnny was a nut, no pun intended. For example, he once threw away his shoe to punish his foot for stepping on a worm. But Johnny was much more than just a nut. Johnny used to go to the cider mills in Western Pennsylvania and get the seeds from the part of the apple that was being thrown away. Apple seeds have a little bit of cyanide in them which makes them very bitter so cider mills are careful about always throwing them away. Johnny would then take these seeds to where no one lived but where he thought people would soon be moving. He would plant his seeds and grow apple trees. Five years later when people moved into the area (Johnny was very good at guessing which areas would become popular) he would sell his trees. The law at the time required that anyone claiming land had to grow fifty apple trees to show that they were serious about living on the land. Johnny did so well with his apple tree business that he died a very wealthy man.

But here’s the part that Disney never mentions. Apple trees grown from seeds produce very sour fruit that is almost always inedible. Henry David Thoreau wrote, “[the apples] were sour enough to set a squirrel’s teeth on edge and make a jay scream.” The apples that we get in the store are always grown by grafting. So if Johnny’s apples were inedible what did people do with them? They made them into hard cider. Yep, as author Michael Pollan writes, “Johnny Appleseed was bringing the gift of alcohol to the frontier.” And that is the real story of Johnny Appleseed.

SUGARY SODA STUDIES

SEPTEMBER 25, 2012 - SUGARY SODA STUDIES
SUGARY SODAS LINKED TO OBESITY...WELL, DUH.

We are all well aware that added sugar in your diet leads to weight gain...and when left unchecked, obesity.
Moderation, people, moderation.

Check out this story in today's SE Missourian:
Various soft drink cups are next to stacks of sugar cubes at a news conference May 31 at New York's City Hall. Two major experiments found that children and teens gained less weight when they regularly drank calorie-free beverages instead of sugary ones. A third study gives the first clear evidence that consuming sugary drinks interacts with genes that affect weight.

SURVIVOR? IT'S NOT A GAME

SEPTEMBER 24, 2012 - SURVIVOR? IT'S NOT A GAME

SURVIVING CANCER...IT'S NOT LIKE IN THE MOVIES...

Seven.  To some, seven is their lucky number.  To me, seven marks the number of years it has been since I was diagnosed with breast cancer.  September 26, 2005.  I remember the exact day that my surgeon told me, because it was my parents anniversary.  "Hey, y'all.  Happy anniversary. Oh, btw...I have cancer."  Not really on the list for 45+ year gifts.  But my husband and I were very positive, as we had faith in God, in the surgeon, our faith family, and in my over health and ability to fight.  My doctors all said that having faith and a strong support team were some of the best medicines.  After two surgeries, chemotherapy and radiation, I was given a clean bill of health and told that the 5-year and 10-year marks were the ones to celebrate.

To mark seven fortunate years of survival, I have made it my goal to raise awareness for our friends in the Southeast Missouri area.  I don't just mean the women...men are affected by breast cancer too. Breast cancer is the second most diagnosed cancer in women, and is the number two killer.  One in eight women is diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime, and more and more cases of men are occurring.  It is becoming critical that we take control of our own health.

Here are some facts (thanks to St. Francis' Womancare insert in the SE Missourian):
  • Early screenings and treatment can reduce breast cancer deaths
  • More than 2.5 million women have beaten breast cancer in the United States
  • Today, only 51 percent of women get their annual mammograms
  • Women 40 and older should schedule a yearly screening for early detection
  • Women in their 20s and 30s should have a clinical breast exam at least every three years
Stay tuned for more in October...

WEEKENDS ARE FOR ?

SEPTEMBER 21, 2012 - WEEKENDS ARE FOR ?

WHAT YOU CAN FIND ON THE WEEKEND...

SUNDAYS AT 9/8C
Key Battle:
Revenge vs. The Good Wife
Can camp take down cerebral? Emily Thorne brings her Revenge-ing to Sundays, inheritingDesperate Housewives' old slot and going up against The Good Wife. Elsewhere: NBC will haveSunday Night Football in the fall, and Fox wraps the night with its animation block with Family Guyand American Dad.

Watch: Revenge
The soap is one of the few shows that is guaranteed to be watercooler talk the next morning and you probably won't want to be the odd man out. Plus, with an earlier time and a stronger lead-in in
Once Upon a Time than it had its first season, Revenge has a very good shot of attracting more eyeballs and putting a red X over Alicia Florrick....I'm a big fan of Emily Van Camp-all the way back to her days on Everwood.

DVR:
The Good Wife
The show will be delayed by football most weeks anyway, so you might as well record it and spend your time watching something else.

Skip:
American Dad!
We'd rather spend time with the Griffins.

Watch online:
Family Guy
Stewie & Co. are still good for some laughs...

THURSDAY NIGHT G WAR

SEPTEMBER 20, 2012 - THURSDAY NIGHT G WAR

Thursdays are big nights for television...and this year is no different!

You will find a lot of the same, and then there are some changes...

THURSDAYS AT 9/8C
Key Battle:
Glee vs. Grey's Anatomy
Glee will aim to take a bite out of Grey's Anatomy's similar female-friendly audience. Also in the mix: New series
Beauty and the Beast on The CW, while Person of InterestThe Office and Parks and Recreation return in the same slots.

Watch: Glee
Season 4 will toggle between McKinley High and Rachel's exploits in New York City, a format that Fox Entertainment President Kevin Reilly dubs a "
show within a show." Who doesn't want to see how — and if — Ryan Murphy's brainchild can pull it off?

DVR:
Grey's AnatomyParks and Recreation
You wanna see how they make it out of the woods and if anyone else dies, right? So you just skip to those parts. Grey's is still a dependable performer, and while the plane crash, Lexie's death and Teddy's exit will spark more story lines, it still feels a little been-there-done-that, especially if the first half of the season is everyone in mourning. Again. (See: Season 6.) Meanwhile, Parks and Rec is sure to wring hilarity from Leslie's city council seat that you'll want to savor over and over again.

Skip:
Beauty and the BeastPerson of Interest
Sorry, but we can't really picture Kristin Kreuk as a tough cop. And let's just say the beast-morphing effects are almost
as laughable as thisPerson of Interest is a solid performer, but hardly a breakout hit that anyone thought it could be this time last year, and it's currently unavailable online or for download. Maybe that'll change this season? Although, as a male-skewing show, POI is perfect counterprogramming to Glee and Grey's.

Watch online:
The Office
The Office is on its last legs.

WEDNESDAY WILL BE COUNTRY!

SEPTEMBER 19, 2012 -WEDNESDAY WILL BE COUNTRY!

THERE ARE MULTIPLE NEW SHOWS!
AND NASHVILLE!

This new show promises to be high drama, with a fading Nashville superstar forced to team up with a teen sensation or face the loss of her tour, as well as the promotion of her latest records. Starring Connie Britton and Hayden Panettiere, both holding their own, it harkens to the film Country Strong with Gwenyth Paltrow and Tim McGraw, but with emotionally stronger characters.  The series kicks off on October 10th, on ABC, at 9pm...but you can watch online!

TUESDAY IS FOR TV

SEPTEMBER 18, 2012 - TUESDAY IS FOR TV

TUESDAYS AT 9/8C
Key Battle: New Girl and The Mindy Project vs. Happy Endings and Don't Trust the B---- in Apartment 23 vs. Go On and The New Normal
Who will have the last laugh? Six (!) comedies will face off this hour, three of them being new shows. Also on: New drama Emily Owens, M.D. will check in for The CW and CBS has NCIS: Los Angeles.

Watch: New GirlThe Mindy Project
Mindy Kaling's comedy is one of the buzziest new shows and a pairing with Zooey Deschanelseems too good to be true. With another new comedy, Ben and Kate, preceding it, New Girl won't have the strong lead-in that Happy Endings (Dancing with the Stars) and Go On (The Voice) will, but its lead-in will be a better tonal fit.

DVR:
Happy EndingsDon't Trust the B---- in Apartment 23
ABC's weird and wacky comedies — with their meta-references and kinetic style — lend themselves better to DVR viewing, when you can pause, laugh, rewind, notice something new and laugh again.

Skip:
Emily Owens, M.D.
We're putting this under here until The CW comes up with a better name. What was wrong withFirst Cut?

Watch online:

Go OnThe New NormalNCIS: LA
You only have so much room on your DVR, right? And once you've seen one explosion on NCIS: LA, you've seen them all.

MONDAY ON TV THIS FALL

SEPTEMBER 17, 2012 - MONDAY ON TV THIS FALL
TV WATCHING IS NOT MY PRIORITY, BUT....

MONDAYS AT 8/7C
Key Battle:
The Voice vs. Dancing with the Stars
The Voice enters the fall fray for the first time, going head-to-head to with
Dancing with the StarsAll-Stars. Also in the slot: New comedy Partners will launch after How I Met Your Mother, while90210 returns to Mondays. Bones stays put.
Watch: The Voice
The Voice has fared well as a midseason series, but midseason is less competitive than the fall and it won't have the Super Bowl off which to piggyback either. The curiosity factor will be there to see if they do anything new or different to make its mark on a crowded slate. Many viewers haven't seen the "blind audition" aspect before--and the marketability of an artist's looks shouldn't count, should they?

DVR:
Dancing with the StarsBones
Dancing could get a ratings boost with an all-stars outing, but since you will already know what to expect from the cast for the most part, you can fast-forward through all the people you don't want to see again. Bones left off with one juicy cliff-hanger — Brennan on the run — and someone probably wants to see where she ends up.

Skip:
90210
90210 hasn't been appointment TV since the paternity reveal of Kelly's son...wait, who is Kelly again?

Watch online:

How I Met Your MotherPartners
You probably tired of waiting to meet Mrs. Mosby. As for Partners, comedies are much more easily digestible watching online than dramas.
